Stepping Stones: Why Recognition Is Simply Preparation for Future Achievement

One of my Mentor asked me recently “Where were you over a year ago?” did you forget all your milestones?

It resurfaced a post from Professor Na Fu, Chair of Responsible Leadership at Trinity Business School, celebrating my receipt of the HR Technology Pioneer Award.

Having an academic leader of Professor Fu’s standing endorse this milestone gave the award significant academic and market weight. In leadership and management advisory, external validation from renowned chairs in responsible leadership and organisational science is an invaluable asset. It confirms that the bridge between strategic technology and human-centred leadership is not merely theoretical—it is an operational necessity.

Yet, revisiting that moment served primarily as a reminder of what milestones actually represent: stepping stones.

Leadership Beyond Systems

True leadership in enterprise technology has never been about software architecture alone. It is about empowering people. Systems exist to enable human potential, foster collaboration, and deliver sustainable value across complex organisations. Delivering a scalable platform requires a dedicated, aligned team; no individual builds meaningful transformation in isolation.

Momentum and Purpose

I have not slowed down since that recognition. If anything, it accelerated my commitment to continuous improvement.

That award was not a culmination; it was fuel. It directly reinforces my ongoing doctoral research, where the focus remains steadfast on leveraging responsible innovation and organisational transformation to improve people’s daily working lives and well-being.

A Note for My Students

To the students and emerging leaders I work with, I used to deflect compliment and thought people keep telling me well done, where not genuine. I learned that wasn't true. So 'Celebrate and take any wins, even the small ones'

External recognition validates past efforts, but leadership is defined by what you build next. Every achievement is simply preparation for the next level of impact. Keep your focus on the people you serve, stay grounded in continuous learning, and use each milestone to propel your next contribution forward.
